Barbastro, November 27th, 2025. On 19th of November, as part of the European HENKO NET project, co-financed by the Interreg Sudoe program, the Gérontopôle Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Bordeaux University Hospital organized the conference "Artificial intelligence and palliative care: from idea to sustainability" held at the Regional Council Headquartes in Bordeaux.
Members of Barbastro Hospital attended this conference, which brought together researchers, practitioners, ethicists, user representatives and policymakers from France, Spain and Portugal. They shared their expertise and explored the conditions for the sustainable deployment of AI, balancing technological promises with ethical challenges.
Digital policies and democracy in health
Julian Illana, primary care doctor of the sector, participated in the final block of the day focused on how to integrate AI into public palliative care policies. This final round table discussion provided an opportunity to bring together institutional, associative and regional perspectives on the role of AI in healthcare democracy and equitable access to palliative care.
During the conference, examples, use cases and strategies were presented, from the design of algorithms to their practical implementation. The focus was on innovations that respect human beings and meaningfully support people at the end of their lives.
In conclusion, although care is based on interaction, trust and attention to others, technology can provide real support for professionals, carers and patients, rather than being just a technical feat.
